About Alan
Alan Eliott's understanding of quality meat is in his blood. With a farming background in pedigree cattle, Alan began showing prize winning animals as a child, and his prodigious understanding of the livestock industry stood him in good stead when he started working part time at Joe Hutton's butcher shop in Cookstown, Northern Ireland.
Discovering a passion for the skills of the butcher trade, Alan enjoyed the tutelage of one of Northern Ireland's most adept butchers, and Joe Hutton claimed: "He is a great talent, the best I've ever seen in 45 years of working as a butcher. I would say Alan is a perfectionist, and combined with his talent and his approach to hard work it makes him, I think, unbeatable. He has achieved so much already, but this is only the very start, and his future will be very, very exciting."
Moving to a new country and opening his own shop on his 19th birthday, Alan soon built up a large and loyal customer base. The last two years has seen Alan recognised as one of the country's up and coming entrepreneurs, scooping the Haggis Champion title at the ridiculously young age of 22, and following it up with Champion wins for his Black Pudding and traditional Steak Pies.
As a result of his success Alan was invited to a reception with the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh at Holyrood Palace and while there presented the Queen's chef, Mark Flanagan, with one of his prize winning haggis.
Alan has rounded off a remarkable 2008 by winning the UK Young Butcher of the Year 2008 award, a prestigious award which attracts entries from the best butchers throughout the UK. The awards are run by Meat Trades Journal and Editor Ed Bedington commented: "Alan's sheer energy and ambition dazzled the judges who felt his achievements from such a young age deserved to be recognised. Alan's enthusiasm for the trade is quite breath-taking and I am sure he will go far."
